First IB students at Rugby School celebrate successful results

Rugby School is delighted with its first set of International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) results and congratulates the 28 pioneering students in our first cohort who have done so well.

Half the cohort achieved our School average of 38 points or better, good enough to meet the standard offer from Oxford. We are thrilled that 35 per cent of students achieved 40 points or better. This puts them in the top 10 per cent of candidates worldwide.

Gareth Parker-Jones, Head Master of Rugby School, said: “The IB is a natural fit with Rugby School’s ethos which is that the Whole Point of education is to develop a Whole Person. We share its emphasis on enquiry and reflection, communication and collaboration, critical thinking and global mindedness. This approach to teaching and learning, including crossing subject boundaries, starts at Rugby in Year 9. Creativity, Activity and Service – for which IB points are awarded – are already embedded in our curriculum as are music, sport and the performing arts.

“So I was not surprised by the enthusiasm of our first students to take the IB. They were excited by the broad range of intellectual experience it offered and the opportunities it would present. It’s a rigorous course, requiring a mature approach to learning, and they all deserve praise for their hard work. In addition, they have taken a coaching role in encouraging those 31 students taking the IB exams next year.

He added: “Praise is also due to our staff who enthusiastically undertook the necessary training, when we decided to offer the IB as an alternative to A levels in 2021, and I would like to thank them for their part in our students’ success.”
